Large Helical Device (LHD) Information

At Large Helical Building, we are constructing the Large Helical Device(LHD). The LHD is the world's largest stellarator with two superconducting helical coils and six superconducting poloidal (vertical field) coils. The design will have a vacuum vessel 3.9m in major radius and 1.6m in minor radius. The helical coils produce a magnetic field of 3 Tesla (1st phase) and 4 Tesla (2nd phase). The LHD will become operational in 1998.

This page introduce you to the LHD project by providing basic information on a technical design of the LHD, Large Helical Device Building, and physics to be explored at LHD. Take a look at subgroup pages for details of each part.
